Contemporary, Functional Ceramic Art Collection
Marlene Jack has an M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and is Professor Emeritus of Ceramics of the College of William and Mary, where she taught for 39 years. On the Board of Directors of the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) from 1981-88, she was made a lifetime Fellow of the Council in 1989. She has worked both sculpturally and functionally. Her clay sculptures use figures to communicate ideas related to the human condition, particularly concepts centered on fear, luck, loss, and time. Her roots, however, are in function and her current work in porcelain is focused on serving and presentation pieces for the home. She lives and works in Barhamsville, Virginia, and her work is shown nationally and regionally in gallery and museum venues around the country.
