"I started playing with clay in school, in 1968. I got really serious with clay while working on my Master’s Degree in 1986. I was introduced to clay by my Junior High art teacher, Mr. Collins. He was very inspirational and technically, very strong with clay and wheel throwing. He is the main reason I decided to become a teacher! My gallery work is comprised mostly of hand-built vessels and plates made with slabs of clay, but I’ll also add in some wheel thrown work as well. I think my best work has been my sculptural teapots with the narrative, story-telling component that I incorporate with sgrafitto decoration." - Lonnie Schang
