Alex Macias

Alex Macias enjoys creating functional ceramics, made to be used in day-to-day life. Macias strives to elevate simplistic forms and create a tactile experience, evident in the color of clay that she throws with, to the finishes and glaze on each piece.

Her background in ceramics is atypical; her first step into adulthood, she was set on becoming a mechanical engineer, with her interests focused on space. After a combination of health issues and not wanting to spend the rest of her life behind a computer screen, Macias decided to quit engineering school. Feeling lost, and unsure of her next step in life, Macias found herself spending hours behind her pottery wheel. Throwing as a pastime morphed into something she saw as her future.

Today, Alex Macias' studio work focuses on form and iteration, balancing the sliding scale of what works well in a practical sense and what looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Macias loves throwing pots, that’s what started her ceramic career, and she hopes that her joy is reflected when people look at her pieces.
